To describe Veritas would be a LONG blogpost. God gave me the privilege to be Forum Director for the Veritas Forum at Cal this year, and it was such a blessing. If you saw me last week, I may not have called it a blessing. However, in retrospect, it was a beautiful gift from God that I got to encounter and experience. And I'm thankful.
"Why Science Isn't Enough: Faith, Reason, and the Human Need for Certainty." That was the title of Professor Troy Van Voorhis' talk, MIT Professor of Chemistry. This topic is way above my head because of its relation to science, but so engaging with my heart because of my own need for certainty.
As you probably know about me, I can often move forward in tasks and go, go, go, not valuing rest, but, even worse, not valuing stopping to remind myself why I'm moving forward in the task at all. The prayer time the night before Veritas put this back into perspective and I was, once again, convicted. I forgot that the whole point of Veritas is for worship to God. Worship. I was worshiping. I know I was. But I was worshiping the tasks, the talk, the outreach, and myself. But worship of God... that was one thing I kept losing sight up.
And, let me tell you, God was worshiped that night. He was given glory by the speaker, and He was given glory by students. And the Holy Spirit was present in that room. That room where over 700 were seated and got to hear the Gospel. That room where one student responded on his comment card: "Up until tonight I didn't believe in God. Now I'm considering Him. Tell me more."
Tell him more! About God! He's asking for this! If all other details seemed to go poorly that night and this young man still wrote this on his card... it was all worth it. One life changed for God is worth all of the time, effort, and resources that we put forth. Eternal change. What more could you pray for?
So, when you ask how Veritas went, I will proceed to tell you that it was an evening where God was worshiped. And for that, I say it was successful.
